From East to West

From East to West: Reggio Emilia, Parma, Padova, Venezia, Torino Two weeks program

For this “Itinerant Italian” stay program the guideline is not to visit as many touristic places as possible (a travel agency would be more proper), but to live together a cultural stay, trying to plunge in the atmospheres of the places, to meet friends that live in the cities that I have chosen, to enjoy the friendly and warm reunions, to chat, laugh and know each other.

Note: During the summer period it is possible to spend a pleasant day in the fresh of the mountains near Torino, in one of the nice town of the Susa Valley, easily reachable. Or, in the hottest hours, refresh with a nice swim in one of the city's sport clubs with swimming pool.

For whoever is interested 3 cooking classes of traditional Italian cuisine are scheduled.

Day 1: Arrival in Reggio Emilia. Settle down at home and welcome dinner.

Day 2: Walk downtown among historic architectures, squares and alleys

Day 3: Car trip on the hills of Reggio Emilia and panoramic tour of the Castles of Matilde (Matilde di Canossa) In alternative visit of the Town of Fontanellato and of the Castle of the Dukes of San Secondo

Day 4: Visit the art sites and the historical center of Parma (15 minutes by train): Cathedral, San Giovanni Cloisters, Church of the Steccata Madonna, Palazzo Farnese or della Pilotta (National Gallery and private Theater of the Farnese family). Lunch in Parma. Return in the afternoon and dinner at home.

Day 5: Transfer to Padova. Settle down at home and walk downtown.

Day 6: am: shopping in Piazza delle Erbe, the old medieval market, Palace of the Region Administration, aperitif in the historical Caffè Pedrocchi. pm: The Scrovegni Chapel: moving vision of Giotto's frescoes (fundamental the booking in great advance)

Day 7: Palladian Itinerary: boat trip along the Brenta river and visit of the Palladian Villas.

Day 8: Transfer to Venezia. Settle down at home and walk along the calli (streets), canals, campi (squares) and campielli (small squares). Dinner in a typical venetian bacaro. Live music walking in the magic Piazza San Marco

Day 9: Shopping at the Rialto market among fish stalls and the colorful fruit and vegetable stalls.

Day 10: More Venezia: the Giudecca, the Arsenal, Santa Maria degli Angeli, Caravaggio, Tiziano, Tintoretto...Await for the night to listen to the magic of silence.

Day 11: Transfer to Torino. In the afternoon settle down at home and walk in the neighborhood

Day 12: Torino's city center: Piazza Castello, Royal Palace, Via Roma, Palazzo Madama. Lunch downtown. Browse in shops or visit an art exhibition.

Day 13: Chose between: a breathtaking view from the Mole Antonelliana and plunge into the magic world of the Cinema Museum that is hosted inside the Mole. Or visit the Egyptian Museum or enter the Valentino Park and walk while chatting, stopping at food and drink stalls, or read under the shade of a tree.

Day 14: An excursion to be chosen between the Saint Michael Abbey (Sacra di San Michele) or the Superga Basilica, or the Complex of Venaria (La Reggia di Venaria) .

Day 15: Breakfast and departure.

Dear Luisa, I would once again like to tell you that I'm extremely happy to have chosen my homestay in Reggio Emilia with you as a teacher. I have never had any doubts that the best way to learn Italian is to live in Italy, among Italians.

I had a wonderful time with Luisa. I am a complete beginner and perhaps should have had more under my belt before attempting a total immersion course but Luisa is a patient teacher.

I attended Luisa’s homestay language course during Christmas in 2005. The lessons were very useful. Moreover I really enjoyed staying with her and sharing the holiday season with her nice family members in a very Italian way.

Ciao cara Luisa,
Sono a Parigi per il lavoro!

I had studied Italian in group settings at a number of schools in Italy before finding Luisa. I was ready for something one-on-one and more intensive and I didn't want to be in a touristy place where I'd hear English around me too much.
