The City

.: The Location:

Reggio Emilia is crossroads for road and rail connections between the main national roads.

The center of an intense network of roads that unite her to the minor towns of the province with panoramic routes that run along streams, run up mountains and hills passing through green valleys.
Of particular natural and historical interest is the Mathildic road, that takes its name from the Grand Duchess Mathilda of Canossa: medieval castles, fortresses and towers on top of hills that dominate gentle valleys. The most famous one is the Castle of Canossa (X century), then follow the Castle of Carpineti, of Garzano of Rossena, of Bianello. Every year from May to September historical parades in medieval costumes and performances are organized.

.: The Culture:

To the institutional initiatives, such as the rich and well organized City Library “A. Panizzi”, Municipal Museums, the Parmeggiani Gallery and the National Archives, there are many and remarkable activities in the show business.

.: Teatre, Art and Music:

The center of the dance and the “Ater Balletto”, two big theatres, with programs of music and dance at the Teatro Municipale Valli and prose works at the Teatro Ariosto, contemporary dance in the smaller theatre of the Cavallerizza that is the seat of original experimental researches of music and language: the “The Reggio Emilia Jazz e oltre (The Reggio Emila Jazz and beyond)”, a meeting between jazz and ethnic musicians of all over the world. “Progetto Novecento” popular activities dedicated to the main artistic trends of the contemporary era.

.: Cinema:

There are various initiatives and shows in the cinema field with a program coordinated between the cinemas of the city and of the province, that include besides the projections also meetings with the directors and discussions.

.: City and tradition:

Churches, Palaces and monuments are well described in every tourist guide, I prefer to mention other less know details, that can make the free time in this city quite pleasant.
The House of Tibet, direct emanation, from the cultural point of view of the Tibetan government in exile born in 1990 at the presence of the Dalai Lama. It stands in a medieval village, Votigno di Canossa, a few kilometers from Reggio. Director is the Tibetan artist Thashi Tsering Lama, considered the greatest expert of sacred Tibetan painting.
For the traditions and folklore lovers besides the spectacular Mathildic parades, various are the festivals and fairs that take place in the surrounding towns: antique trading, agroindustrial products, many in an area that has made agriculture and farming an activity of high productivity, it is sufficient to think at the parmigiano reggiano, the hams, the balsamic vinegar.

.: The nature:

The lovers of the agroindustrial culture can visit the cheese factories where the most famous cheese of the world is produced, the Parmigiano Reggiano precisely, and the vinegar factories, where with a process that is more then 1000 years old, and an aging never inferior to 12 years, the balsamic vinegar is produced, called the “ elixir of the princes” that more then a vinegar is a refined fragrance for many foods, from salty (very good on cheeses, meats, etc) to sweet ones.

.: The shopping:

For the shopping lovers in the end, there is the elegant Via Emilia that crosses all the center, a string of shopwindows of fashion (it is the seat of Max Mara and Mirella Burani), and entering the small side streets of the center, forbidden to the traffic, one can peacefully browse among art galleries, ceramics, antiques, prints and old books, handicrafts and a thousand other curiosities.

Dear Luisa, I would once again like to tell you that I'm extremely happy to have chosen my homestay in Reggio Emilia with you as a teacher. I have never had any doubts that the best way to learn Italian is to live in Italy, among Italians.

I had a wonderful time with Luisa. I am a complete beginner and perhaps should have had more under my belt before attempting a total immersion course but Luisa is a patient teacher.

I attended Luisa’s homestay language course during Christmas in 2005. The lessons were very useful. Moreover I really enjoyed staying with her and sharing the holiday season with her nice family members in a very Italian way.

Ciao cara Luisa,
Sono a Parigi per il lavoro!

I had studied Italian in group settings at a number of schools in Italy before finding Luisa. I was ready for something one-on-one and more intensive and I didn't want to be in a touristy place where I'd hear English around me too much.
